Toomey Tourell Fine Art is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition entitled “Soft and Hard”. The two artists exhibiting are Mark Paron and Allison Paschke, who will debut works new to Toomey Tourell.
Dates of Exhibition: Tuesday, November 3rd through Saturday December 12th, 2009. Reception with the artists: Thursday, November 5th from 5:30-7:30 PM.
Mark Paron, a San Francisco based self taught artist, works directly and intuitively with a wide range of materials that are manipulated into sculptural shapes that dance or float- some free standing, others wall mounted. Inspired both by the organic and the synthetic, he re-works and re-interprets the mundane into highly charged, conceptual pieces that belie their initial sources. Largely influenced by the biotic forms in nature, Paron’s work juxtaposes these references with his materials- velvet, leather, vinyl, copper, cable wires and found objects are transformed into fresh, innovative abstractions. At first viewing, his sculptures appear as glossily impersonal artifacts that upon closer inspection reveal a deeply personal, idiosyncratic response to the material world that surrounds him.
Allison Paschke, a Providence Rhode Island based artist, concerns herself with balancing desire and impulse, exploring the tension between opposing concepts. Much of the work, though sculptural in its physicality, often veils and obscures more than it reveals. For example, a translucent resin block is both a solid object and a permeable plane. The cubical sculptures conjure the image of a physical space to enter, yet each side is flat. The work also investigates scale shifts- her porcelain boxes are hand-held size but contain a simple glowing world of indeterminate scale. Large wall pieces, while being physically much larger, contain thousands of tiny details that pull the viewer into an intimate closeness. This desire to reduce and visually quiet an image lead to the magnification and intensification of visual phenomena. Her chosen materials- resin, porcelain, mirror and gold leaf to name a few, also evoke the interactive, ethereal qualities of space and light.
Both artists have been exhibited widely, and been the recipient of honors and awards. Please contact the gallery for more information.
