The painting of Stephanie Weber, while abstract in composition, provide reference points to both natural phenomena and the richness and chaos of the urban. Her new work introduces energetic diagonal bands which complement the horizontal or vertical striations. Broader areas of color are richly hued and layered, creating a variety of texture and nuance. These fields of color bounce off of one another, causing tension and contrast that suggest a kind of sensuous minimalism.
The subtly reflective surfaces of the honeycombed aluminum panels that the artist utilizes add luster to this paint layer and create the quiet dynamism that has become her trademark. Weber’s paintings have a cool logical structure and simultaneously touch an emotional chord. The structure and intellect pair with exuberant color to create work both emotional and contemplative. These emotionally expressive yet meditative works balance translucent bands with varying layers of planes of opaque color.
