Dawn Arrowsmith

Dawn Arrowsmith was born in San Francisco and currently lives and works in Southern California. For several years her work has derived from investigations of nature, longevity, meditation and daily sustenance. The organic circle shapes in the previous work have evolved into her new reductivist “Circle Paintings”, which offer a profound color experience centered in a calm, contemplative state of balance.

A catalog of “The Circle Paintings” with an essay by Christopher Miles is available at the gallery. Following is an excerpt from the catalog:

…the colors consistently are intense, even loud and brash, but always remain appreciable for their subtlety and quietude; they seem flat, solid, even, but everywhere are delicately modulated; and looking into them, one experiences an afterglow, which I like to think of as a kind of perceptual afterburn, that over time bathes the periphery in a complimentary tint and that allows you to take the color of the painting with you on your eye like a taste lingering on your tongue. And in such a way, each of Arrowsmith’s paintings does become, oddly, distinctly, like a layering of flavors. They offer a kind of minimalist luxury—pure, distilled, economical, but also rich, luscious, erotic.
